In early December, the Gary NAACP, in conjunction with the Gary Community School Corporation and SodexoMAGIC, sponsored a student cooking competition, a cooking demonstration and a cook-off at the Career Center. Renowned chef, author and TV Personality Chef G. Garvin was the guest teacher.
The center houses the Gary Technical Vocational School that provides high school students across Northwest Indiana with the opportunity to receive training in 14 areas of study, including the culinary arts curriculum. Garvin demonstrated cooking techniques with students in an entertaining manner.
The event was supported by NAACP members, the faith community, parents, teachers, administrators and other students. Students were able to talk directly to Garvin as he shared his personal journey toward being a highly recognized chef and entertainer. He held a book signing at the end of the event.
The winning team will compete in the culinary arts division of the ACT-SO division of the NAACP. The Afro-Academic Cultural Technological and Scientific Olympics is the forum whereby youth compete on a nationwide basis.
